Outreach programmes 2007 - 2008

Tear Jerkers explores the potential and power of ‘crying’ through text, sound art, performance and the visual arts. Artists Lucia Cipriano and Mabel Encinas are working with Asian women at the Jagonari Women’s Educational Resource Centre to examine assumptions associated with crying. The participants are encouraged to create individual crying biographies by creatively questioning notions of crying as ‘taboo’ or as a gendered response. These ‘sob stories’ will be captured on CD and distributed to participants, interested groups and cultural organisations.

Walking East explores walking, play and nature through photography and writing. Artist Susanne Raddman is working with parents from our local community to create a walk that explores and links play and nature through the act of walking. They are drawing inspiration from their urban environment, as well as childhood games, to design and produce a booklet illustrating walking as a creative process beyond its function of getting from A to B. Appealing to adults and children alike, everyone is invited to join the artist and participants to walk the walk when the booklet is launched at the Chisenhale Biennale in September 2007. The book will be distributed free of charge at the event.

Before 2012 is an oral history project that will record the London 2012 Olympic site as it is now, before it is developed and changed forever. Allan Williams will combine his observations, through photographs and paintings, with the memories, stories and photographs of older people who have lived and worked in the area. The project will document a part of London’s heritage that will go through a series of changes as the Olympic site is redeveloped over the next seven years, including the displacement of people’s homes and workplaces, and the old industries, waterways, wildlife and natural recreation of the area. Williams will mount an exhibition in conjunction with older, local people, to create a permanent archive for posterity which will also be available on the Internet.
